About us

For more than 25 years, stories of hope have been written in Uganda. Through God Helps Uganda, disadvantaged children and young people in this East African country are supported, guided, and nurtured according to the holistic educational approach of the Swiss foundation Gott hilft, enabling them to succeed in life despite the most challenging circumstances.

On the ground, GHU is an independent NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) registered under Ugandan law, overseen and strategically led by an international Board of Trustees. Operational management on site is ensured by the national field manager, working in close collaboration with the programme director in Switzerland.

In 1995, a meeting between a Ugandan pastor and the foundation representative of Gott hilft gave rise to the vision of establishing support services for AIDS orphans in Uganda. From 1999, three socio-educational foster families and a Family Encouragement Programme were developed in the capital, Kampala. Following the end of the civil war in northern Uganda, three children’s homes and a Family Encouragement Programme were established in Lira, central Uganda, in 2008. From 2012, GHU entered a phase of consolidation, which concluded in 2018 with the transfer of responsibility to an African field management team.

In response to the prolonged school closures during the Covid-19 pandemic, a provisional internal primary school was set up in Lira in 2020. Since 2023, external pupils from the local community have regularly joined, leading to the decision to develop the provisional school into a permanent, government-recognised primary school. The necessary construction work is currently underway.

With the deployment of a Swiss couple in November 2024, the long-planned vocational training project is taking shape. Young people supported by God Helps Uganda will be able to undertake practical vocational training upon completing their schooling, following the principle of helping people to help themselves.
